The
Nomadic Neuman's
August Travel Log
|
Monday
August 4, 2003
Elkhart, Indiana
Bright &
early Monday morning (6:30 am), Leanne waited to get our coach checked
in for service at the
Monaco Service Center. Just some minor paint issues so we didn't expect
to be here but a couple of days.
 |
They
have a large lobby complete with a computer workstation.
On the right is my laptop where I spent most of that first day trying
to catch up on my photos.
Dan enjoyed chatting with other RVer's and learning new things about the
care of the coach. |
|
|
 |
After
passing Dan's inspection in the shop, we pulled up to the dump station
in the back lot before heading on our way into MI to meet Sandy & Buzz
for a few days of travel in the Traverse Bay area.
 |

August
7, 2003
Holland, MI
We have to give Walmart credit for being very RV friendly as we've stayed
overnight in many.
We boondocked in their parking lot in Holland, MI and watched a beautiful
sunset at Tunnel Park on the coast.
August 8-12, 2003
Traverse Bay RV Park
Acme, MI
|
 |
 |
This
RV Park had the most comfortable "shower suites"
we've ever seen at a park.
All four of
us packed our gear and headed up together for a shower party, each with
our own suite!
.. .. ..
|
I
still find so much pleasure picking widlflowers in all thier natural splendor.
...
|
|
Next
day we drove around one of the penninsulas in the northwestern corner
of the state.
We stopped at NorthPoint Village to admire the small coastal village &
found a houseboat complete with gardens.
.. ..
Then the penninsula's
tip & Grand Traverse Lighthouse which was surrounded with these gorgeous
hydrangea bushes. |
. . |
In
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore we drove the "Pierce Stocking
Scenic Drive"
which included ten spectacular overlook areas
... |
 |
 |
 |
This dune
overlook enticed hikers to attempt the steep climb down....only
to have to crawl back up on hands & knees.

|
Buzz was really impressed with the ease of our satellite internet access
and
began to dream of ways to build himself a business while traveling around
the country.
 |
We
had lunch at the century old Sleder's Saloon where I got to "kiss
the moose"
. ..
During Prohibition,
only men were allowed in the saloon....
so the women had a private entrance in an attached building with a white
picket fence & all!
... ..

After lunch
we said good-bye to Sandy & Buzz as they headed back home to Stevensville.
|
After
leaving the Holme's, Dan & I decided to explore the other penninsula
which is covered in cherry orchards and grape vineyards.
.....
The tip had
the Old Mission Lighthouse, the log cabin and the Old Mission Church
which reminding me of Sturbridge Village.
..
.....
.. ..
We stopped
at the general store where they had locally grown & preserved cherry
"everything".
Dan found a flat package of taffy for $1.75. (Remember when we
could buy the same thing for 5 cents?)
 |
August
11, 2003
Bob & Marie Smith, friends we'd met at the Holiday Rambler Rally in
July,
joined us at the Traverse Bay RV Park.
They brought
another couple, the Goldman's, traveling with their two grandchildren.
We had a wonderful
visit.
..
....
Before pulling
out the next morning, Dan was up on the roof checking the dish.

August

We made it to Cheboygan!

What fun to
spend time with Lily again. |
 |
.....

For the first 2 weeks, we stayed about 30 miles south of Cheboygan at
Elkwood Campground
in Wolverine, MI

The spot we
had was peaceful, private and full of wildlife.
.....

|
Lily
spent several nights with us at Elkwood, a bundle of energy & full
of spunk.
She played
in the park, the sand, the pool...
.. ..
.. ..
And roasted
marshmallows!
.. .. ..
Below is the
laundry/shower house so Lily got a nice warm shower nightly before crawling
into bed.

HAPPY
5TH BIRTHDAY
LILY ! |
.. ..

Like father...like
son. Both sweet lovers!

All three girls
became engrossed when I showed them how to bake the "Barbie"
cake in her little pretend oven.

August
27, 2003
We decided
to move closer to the kids, so we left the solitude of Wolverine &
moved to the Cheboygan Fairgrounds.
Lily had her very first ride in our motor home, what
a thrill it was for her in the front seat!

|
Danyelle
& Lily had fun at the Cheboygan seashore park.
.....
This middle photo captures a "rare moment" - Lily
sitting quietly!
... ...

We brought
Lily to get her hair cut and when she was done,
she had a chance to chat with her cousin, Jacob, who had just been to
his first day of school!
Lily starts
school on September 2 !

May angels watch over and protect each one of us.
Thank you, God, for giving us this opportunity to visit with family and
friends
and to discover the wonders of nature in this awesome country.
