The Nomadic Neuman's
June Travel Log

May 31st - June 8th, 2003
Candy Cane RV Park & Campground
Steeleville, Missouri

We pulled into Steeleville, Missouri looking forward to getting caught up with our many projects that
somehow always seem to build up. Little did we know that we would soon have two new clients to work with!
This is a wonderful campground with lots of activities in the surrounding area.

Dan got Bill's systems up & running on the internet, got him his own domain and set up his email service.
Taking break from designing his site, I enjoyed feeding his ducks & chickens!
.....
Bill Siems, owner of Candy Cane RV Park & Campground and
Skip Hajek
at Green's Canoe Rental & Campground
soon became not only our first new clients since our "Nomadic Neuman" journey began but also
very special friends whom we know we will visit again in our travels around the USA.

.....
We had a wonderful float down the Meramac River....... "Thanks, Skip!"

Look at these turtles sunning themselves on a log. From tiny ones to big ones.
Dan took a break as I paddled from the back of the raft, 1st one side then the next !

There were plenty of great spots for fishermen along the route.

In town, I went to the street rummage sale......and driving around we found the stream crossing the road!

On their front lawn, a Neumann family remembered their grandparents' candy store
with this sign from their old shop.

At the campground, rabbits, birds & horses made the serene atmosphere enjoyable.

There was a huge Clydesdale ranch just outside of town, so of course, carriages with rides were right at the base of the famous arch.

June 9-11, 2003
St. Louis, Missouri

The Gateway Arch (A very stormy day)

This is the edge of the parking lot we found. As you can see, the cobble lot went right into the Mississippi River!

The tram ride up was pretty cramped, they squeeze 5 people into this little cab!
But once at the top, we saw it was worth the ride.

The Museum of Westward Expansion at the base of the arch was awesome.

I loved our afternoon stroll through The Butterfly House
If anyone wants a beautiful butterfly background or screen saver, I have some, just ask!
......
......

In the hills surrounding St. Louis we discovered "The World Bird Sanctuary".
Their primary mission is to
preserve the earth's biological diversity
and to secure the future of threatened bird species in their natural habitat.

........
This miror in the ladies room looks like real feathers but they are actually carved & then painted.

...

On the acreage next to the birds of prey was a public drive though a park where we enjoyed
a wonderful drive watching elk & deer roam freely through the forest.

June 15, 2003
Elkhart, Indiana

The Amish community is large &
it's really different to drive on
the road next to the horse & buggy.

June 23, 2003
We arrived at Oronoko Lakes in Berrien Springs, Michigan

Since we had planned to stay
in this area for about 6 weeks,
we wanted to find a comfortable, quiet spot where our satellite
would work well.

As you can see, this was
a wonderful place.
The only problem we did
have to put up with was
very poor cell phone service.

...
This dock was right outside our door down the short path you can see above.
Lots of wildlife& nature here to enjoy.
Canadian geese, ducks swans, racoons, chipmunks, bunnies, birds, etc.
I even had a wonderful supply of wild flowers to keep on our table.

...

Warren Dunes State Park was just a few miles down the road.
Although this has a nice campground, there was too much tree cover.
But it's has a gorgeous beach on Lake Michigan (fresh water). Sure looks like the ocean to me!
White sand unlike CA beaches and the surrounding sand dunes were awesome.
...

Throughout our stay in this area, we enjoyed several visits
with Dan's godparents, Aunt Lou & Uncle Pat Larzelere in Benton Harbor, MI

...
They have a wonderful Koi Pond in their back yard as well as the boat Dan
remembers from childhood days
from Sister Lakes which has been converted into a garden!
... ...
Uncle Pat gave us a bumpy, but fun, tour of his acreage in his "little all-terrain buggy".
The 5 acres out back are beautiful, filled with nut trees, pines and lots of MOSQUITOES!
One thing about Michigan, as beautiful as it is, the darn bugs are unbearable.
They loved Dan no matter when or where. His poor body has been covered in bites
right from day 1.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SANDY
June 29, 2003

.. On Sandy's birthday, we went to DiMaggio's Pizza. A childhood Neuman family favorite.
We were joined by Sandy's long time best friend Barb & her husband Roger.
...

I had the priviledge to be
asked to accompany Megan
for her final gown fitting.
July 5th would be here soon.....

June 30, 2003

She was bubbling with excitement and anticipation.
I had to acknowledge that she would be a gorgeous bride.
