The
Nomadic Neuman's
Prince Edward Island
September 2005

We crossed from New Brunswick into PEI on the 8 mile long Confederation
Bridge.
Based in Borden-Carleton, we drove the Jeep over some of the island. |

Prince
Edward Island has more than 50 lighthouses!
(No, we didn't see them all)
Fort Borden Rear-Range Lighthouse
Fort Borden Front-Range Lighthouse
Borden Pier Lighthouse

One of the homes nearby even built a lighthouse room onto their
house!

Potatoes
grow almost everywhere here.....
Yukon Gold, Shepody, Kennebec, Goldrush, Chiefton,
Atlantic, Red Pontiac, Russet Burbank, Superior & Century
Russet

A semi loaded with potatoes heading for maybe the Humpty Dumpty
potato chip factory?

Years
ago, Summerside (on the south coast) became famous for it's red
fox furs.
This mural is on one of the buildings on the main street and the
ropes & buoys are part of the ports landscaping.

North
Cape Coastal Drive
Hay
fields grow right up to the Atlantic Ocean.
Harvesting "Irish Moss"
Did you know?
It's
used in large quantities by the food industry as a stabilizer
for Ice cream, yogurt & whipped cream and
to make jellies or aspic and as a smooth binder. Also used in
cosmetics as a skin softener
and valuable remedy for the treatment of digestive conditions.
In Therapeutics and Pharmacology,
it's main use is in respiratory problems such as bronchitis, and
it has been used in the past to treat tuberculosis.
The
island has horse ranches that raise & work these large animals
even today.
They
also harvest onto fishing boats as you see below.

West
Point Lighthouse (with matching birdhouse)
North Cape Lighthouse Tignish Lighthouse

On the North Cape is Atlantic Canada's 1st wind farm as well as
the longest natural rock reef in North America.
The reef is under water but you can see the line where it is.
That's Dan walking on the rocks.
And, yes, the rocks, sand and dirt really are that red! |

No way did we see everything on PEI, but hopefully we'll
return and stay longer someday.
